The Care Act 2014 is a key piece of legislation in England that outlines how local authorities must assess and support adults with care needs, as well as their carers.
Wellbeing: Your physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing must be considered in all decisions.
Prevention: Support should aim to prevent or delay the development of care needs.
Personalisation: You have the right to shape your own care and support plan.
Integration: Local services (health, housing, social care) should work together to support you.
Information and Advice: You are entitled to clear, accessible information to help you make informed decisions.
Needs Assessment: Anyone who appears to need care and support is entitled to a free assessment by their local council.
Eligibility & Financial Assessment: If eligible, you'll undergo a financial assessment to determine contributions.
Care and Support Plan: You'll receive a personalised plan to meet your needs.
Reviews and Changes: Your care plan should be regularly reviewed.
Support for Carers: Carers are also entitled to assessments and support.
You can request a personal budget, a clear statement of the money available for your care.
This can be taken as a Direct Payment for more flexibility and control.
Local authorities must investigate concerns of abuse or neglect, ensure your safety, and include your views in the process.
